about UNMUTE
UNMUTE is a National 501(c)(3) non-profit and tax-exempt organization aiming to bridge intergenerational relationships in and around the community. Founded in August 2019 by four high school students, UNMUTE initially launched as a project sponsored by the Lutheran Village at Miller's Grant in Maryland. During the 2019-2020 school year, small groups of students shared their music with seniors every other Saturday.
From April 2020, UNMUTE began delivering virtual concerts due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Student volunteers stayed at home to practice, perform, and record their music performances, continuing to bring inspire hope amongst senior residents. As of April 18, 2026, UNMUTE's student musicians have hosted 184 Virtual Concerts and over 187 in-person concerts. Over 3,300 student musicians have volunteered through more than 330K+ hours of their time and presence. UNMUTE's volunteers hail from 29 U.S. States and 6 foreign countries.
Today, UNMUTE continues to provide opportunities for K-12 students worldwide to serve their community through musical performances for senior centers & assisted living facilities. Volunteers learn how to enable their unique talents, promoting a better society through the power of music and youth volunteerism.
During the school year, UNMUTE hosts in-person concerts at locations in Montgomery County, Howard County, and Baltimore County. These locations include:

UNMUTE seeks to restore and revive the sound output of not only students' musical instruments, but also the voices of their audiences.
