about UNMUTE

UNMUTE strives to restore and revive the sound output of not only their musical instruments but also the voices of their audience. The project focuses on outreach programs and providing opportunities for K-12 students to serve the community with open hearts. Through music performances, students learn to share their unique talents with those in need and to bring color and hope to the lives of many.

Founded in August 2019 and led by student volunteersUNMUTE initially launched as an in-person project sponsored by the Lutheran Village at Miller's Grant in Maryland. During the 2019-2020 school year, small groups of students shared their music with seniors every other Saturday.

Starting from April 2020, UNMUTE began delivering Virtual Concerts due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Student volunteers stayed at home to practice, perform, and record their music performances, continuing to bring smiles to and inspire hope within senior residents. To date, UNMUTE has hosted 86 Virtual Concerts performed by over 1,400 student musicians. Volunteers hail from 24 US States and 6 foreign countries (learn more here).

In March of 2021, UNMUTE has transformed into a National 501(c)(3) non-profit and tax-exempt organization aiming to bridge the intergenerational relationships in and around the community. With the help of students, UNMUTE strives to promote a better society through the power of music, youth volunteerism, and youth development.
